Lesson 6: The Fur Trade Goes Inland, The French and English clash in Acadia, Missions

A. The Fur Trade Goes Inland

2) Map: locate Georgian Bay and Lake Huron. Trace Champlain's route. Locate Three Rivers (Trois Riviers). (see Dickie, p. 33 for map of route.) Could use this map of Ontario or use this one.

4) Time-line Figure or image: This is a wonderful sketch (though small) of Brule making the last portage on his way to Lake Ontario.

5) Supplemental readings: This is meant to be a very quick introduction to the Fur Trade.
However, there is an account of some of Champlain's adventures written up in Champlain Discovers Lake Ontario from A Book of Discovery by M. B. Synge

B. The French and English Clash in Acadia.

*Dickie does not make this clear, but Poutrincourt was an associate of De Monts (who had abandoned the colony in 1607). He returned to Port Royal in 1610 to start anew. When he got there, he found the garden had been tended and manitained by the Mi'kmaq. (Will Ferguson, Canadian History for Dummies, p. 69)
